The present invention relates to a method for determining movement of a horse, such as the gait of the horse, by using a mobile unit (10) comprising at least an accelerometer (20), a processing unit (30) and means (40) for determining at least the gravitational direction. The method comprises the steps of: acquiring accelerometer data as a function of time from the accelerometer when the horse is moving, orienting the accelerometer data in relation to the gravitational direction, and providing at least accelerometer data aligned with the gravitational direction as z-direction data, determining the amplitude of the z-direction data as a function of time, wherein the amplitude is determined as the absolute difference between a maximum value and a minimum value of the z-direction data over a pre-determ ined time interval, determining the frequency of the z-direction data using a fast Fourier transform algorithm, determining the derivate of the z-direction data, and based on said derivate of the z-direction data determining peak and valley values in the z-direction data, and determining the movement of the horse based on the z-direction data.
