A system for preventing mechanical damage to an internal combustion engine, due to ineffective lubrication of the engine itself, comprising means for measuring or estimating a pressure of a lubrication circuit (P) of the internal combustion engine, processing means (ECU ) configured to activate means to prevent mechanical damage to the internal combustion engine (E) at each start of the latter, provided that said pressure is below a predetermined threshold, said prevention means comprise means to limit the maximum revolutions per minute of the internal combustion engine, characterized in that said limiting means are configured to force the rotational speed of the engine to a value given by the following formula: rpm = rpm_mis - C_mis xf (P, T) rpm_mis: current rotational speed, C_mis : delivered torque f (P, T): conversion factor of delivered torque in rpm, as a function of ambient pressure P and ambient temperature T.
