Device (1) for determining a writing or reading mode of an individual carrying spectacles comprising a frame (4) and two lenses (5), the device (1) comprising: - means (3, 31, 33) of measuring the distance between an element of the frame (4) or of the head and a plane (12) of work; means for measuring an angle of inclination (α) of a median plane (10) of the two crystals (5) relative to the vertical (14) in a vertical plane (P) of the head perpendicular to the median plane ( 10); - control means suitable for comparing the measured inclination angle (α) with a set tilt angle and determining a reading mode or a writing mode of the individual according to the comparison, the reading mode being associated to a predetermined reading setpoint distance, and the write mode being associated with a predetermined write set distance; the device being fixed to the spectacle frame (4), the distance measuring means (3, 31, 33) being adapted to measure the distance between the middle plane (10) of the two lenses (5) of the frame ( 4) and a work plane (12); characterized in that the distance measuring means (3, 31, 33) comprise two emitters (31) arranged, in said vertical plane (P), with a non-zero angle between their main transmission axes (310, 311), and a receiver (33) arranged so that it can receive the signal emitted by at least one of the two transmitters (31) and reflected by the working plane (12).
