A method for cutting structural members, such as legs, beams, I-beams or the like to support structures made of steel, concrete, steel and concrete, stone-type materials or the like, using at least one displacement thread (2) having suitable cutting parts, the method of which comprises the following steps: a) the displacement thread (2) is positioned at a certain inclination with respect to a general horizontal plane (O); b) a first cut in a transverse direction with respect to the structural member (1), which extends to a certain depth in said member, in such a way as to produce a first cut line (5); characterized in that c) said displacement thread (2) is rotated at least once around its own center (4) of symmetry to make a second cut in a substantially longitudinal direction relative to said structural member (1), which it extends at a certain height of said element, in such a way as to produce at least two steps (6, 7) at two opposite points of said structural member (1); and d) third cut in a transverse direction with respect to the structural member (1) until the displacement thread (2) emerges from said structural member (1) in such a way as to produce a second cut line (8).
