Apparatus and methods are disclosed for control systems for improvingstability ofelectrical grids by temporarily reducing voltage output of electricalgenerators responsive totransient events on an electrical grid. In one example of the disclosedtechnology, a controller iscoupled is to an automatic voltage regulator, which in turn adjusts excitationcurrent of anelectrical generator responsive to changes in frequency detected for theelectrical grid. Reducingthe output voltage temporarily allows for smaller generators to provide powerto the microgrid.Methods for selecting parameters determining how the controller generates aregulation signalused to adjust the excitation current are further disclosed.
