The invention relates to a method and to an apparatus for providing an expedient operating state (KPI), to a drive system, and to a computer program product and to an industrial plant (1). Starting from movement parameters (BP) such as rotational speed or torque, sensor values (SW) such as a temperature and/or a control setting (RE), a multiplicity of (possible) operating states (KPI) are compiled through functions (F) of the respective movement parameter (BP), of the respective sensor value (SW) and/or of the respective control setting (RE). By means of a benchmark method, at least one expedient operating state (PPI) is selected from the operating state's (KPI). The expedient operating state (KPI) can then be displayed to the operating personnel of the industrial plant (1). The selection of the expedient operating state (KPI) is automated by the invention. Thus, the operating personnel of the industrial plant (1) can be relieved.
