The invention relates to a cobalt-based composite material that offers an optimized combination of properties for the production of components that, in practical use, are subject to high thermal stresses of typically more than 400°C in conjunction with high corrosive and abrasive stresses. For this purpose, the composite material of the invention has been produced by powder metallurgy and has a matrix having the following composition (in % by weight): C: 0.2-3.0%, Si: 1.5%, Mn: 1.5%, Cr: 27.0-32.0%, Ni: 2.0%, Fe: 2.0%, at least one element from the group "Mo, W" with the proviso that Mo: ≤ 6.0%, W: ≤ 14.0%, where Mo ≥ 4.0% when W 0.5% and W ≥ 4.0% when Mo 0.5%, the balance being cobalt and unavoidable impurities. According to the invention, hard substance particles have been embedded in the matrix in contents of 2.5-30% by weight. For production of components from the material of the invention, a cobalt alloy powder of a composition as per the alloy envisaged by the invention for the matrix is provided. This cobalt alloy powder is mixed with hard substance particles such that the content of hard substance particles in the cobalt alloy powder/hard substance particle mixture obtained is 2.5% to 30% by weight. A solid semifinished product is formed from the cobalt alloy powder/hard substance particle mixture by a sintering method or an additive method. Subsequently, the semifinished product obtained is processed to give the finished component.
