The present invention provides a polynucleotide and a method for efficiently regulating gene expression. Disclosed are: a polynucleotide capable of hybridizing with a contiguous sequence of 5-9 bases (including the base of the 3' end of the mRNA) of the 5' side from the base corresponding to the 3' end of the mRNA and 5-9 bases (not including the base of the 3' end of the mRNA) of the 3' side in a genomic sequence; the aforementioned polynucleotide, including at least one nucleotide analog; and a gene expression regulator having the polynucleotide as an active component.
