A method and system for monitoring medicine-taking by elderly people. The method comprises: at a preset medicine-taking inspection time, a management device sends medicine-taking monitor requests to smart medicine boxes corresponding to elderly people (101); each smart medicine box monitors whether an event occurs in which the smart medicine box is opened and a medicine is taken out within a preset time (102); if the smart medicine box monitors that an event occurs in which the smart medicine box is opened and a medicine is taken out within the preset time, the smart medicine box sends a message that the medicine has been taken to the management device (103); if the smart medicine box does not monitor that an event occurs in which the smart medicine box is opened and a medicine is taken out within the preset time, the smart medicine box sends a message that the medicine has not been taken to the management device (104). The present invention improves a supervision effect for the elderly people.
