The invention relates to an improved method for examining the skin by means of microscopic images while using a convolutional neural network (CNN). The aim of the invention is also to refine said method by additionally analyzing clinical images together with the microscopic images. Another aim of the invention is to devise an apparatus which is particularly suitable for carrying out said method. The advantages obtained by the invention are, in particular, that a rule-independent analysis of lesions can be carried out on the basis of the microscopic and clinical images that are produced in daily dermatological practice in the context of digital skin cancer screening. The invention is independent of the digital recording media, image formats and image resolutions used. The combination of microscopic and clinical images in the context of an analysis by means of a convolutional neural network (CNN) takes the analytical process as such to a new level and allows parallel analysis or individual analysis using the microscopic image or the clinical image.
