The invention relates to a cleaning system and a method for cleaning the inside of a container, wherein the system comprises a base and an extendable member that is extendable from said base in an entry direction, wherein the system is provided with one or more drives for moving said base in a lateral direction, wherein the extendable member is arranged for holding a cleaning tool, wherein the extendable member or the cleaning tool is provided with one or more side detection sensors for detecting the side walls of the container, wherein the system further comprises a control unit that is operationally connected to the one or more drives and that is operationally connectable to the one or more side detection sensors, wherein the control unit is arranged for controlling the lateral position of the base in the lateral direction based on the detection signals from the one or more side detection sensors.
