The invention relates to a method for automatic control of changes of state of a power train (GMP) made up of a heat engine coupled with an automatic transmission having at least one disconnect clutch between the engine and the wheels of a vehicle, by exchanging inter-system instructions between an engine computer (ECM) and a transmission computer (ATCU), in order to exit a normal travel mode by disconnecting the engine when nearing a stop, or by opening the clutch in order to enter a free-wheel travel mode with the engine running, characterised in that the inter-system instructions exchanged include disconnecting the engine during normal travel at high speed when releasing the accelerator pedal with the foot on the brake, as well as during free-wheel travel with the accelerator and brake pedals released.
