The invention pertains to the use of a composition for the manufacture of a nutritional product for: a) decreasing fasting insulin levels; or b) increasing insulin sensitivity; or c) decreasing insulin resistance, in obese or overweight adults of at least 45 years of age, said product comprising per serving between 50 - 300 kcal; between 10 g and 35g proteinaceous matter; and at least 2.5 microgram vitamin D. The adult is preferably suffering from a disease or condition selected from the group consisting of pre-diabetes type 2 or diabetes type 2, and participating in a weight loss program preferably comprising a hypo-caloric diet in combination with an exercise regimen.
