The invention relates to a method for performing a software update in a control unit (11) of a motor vehicle (10). The invention provides that, during driving operation of the motor vehicle (10), a first analysis device (12) of the motor vehicle (10) is used to predict, for a predefined future time interval (22) in which the control unit (11) is operated in order to generate control data (15, 16), an idle time interval (21) in which the generation of the control data (15, 16) of at least one software module (18) of the control unit (11) is interrupted during the driving operation at least for a predefined minimum duration (24) because of a vehicle state existing then, and the software update is started at the beginning of the idle time interval (21).
