According to an embodiment of the present invention, a compression system of a storage drive unit includes: at least one compressibility input; a compression predictor which is configured to predict the compressibility of data based on the at least one compressibility input; a compressor configured to compress the data; and at least one compression input. At least one of the compression predictor or the compressor can be configured to determine a data compression scheme based on the at least one compression input. The at least one compressibility input include one or more of an object extension dictionary, an object signature dictionary, and a library of entropy estimation algorithms while the at least one compression input includes one or more of the quality of service (QoS) profiles, device performance profiles, and compression algorithm performance charts.
