The use of inter-protocol channel sensing and reservation improves backhaul traffic reliability in license-exempt spectrum bands. Physical carrier sensing may be used to scan the channel quality of a plurality of carriers in the license-exempt spectrum band and to select the carrier to use for the wireless backhaul communication link between the first base station and the second base station based on the scanned channel quality. The described features may further comprise the first base station transmitting a reserved frame with a magnetic address to the first carrier before transmission of the backhaul data from the first base station to the second base station on the selected first carrier.
