The present invention relates to a composition for preventing and treating xerostomia that appears as a complication of diabetes using an Ixeris dentate extract as an active ingredient and, more specifically, to an oral spray formulation capable of administrating drugs through a simple and rapid absorption path. The secretion of saliva is reduced while the cells of the submandibular gland tissue of a diabetic animal model are disrupted. However, when the Ixeris dentate extract of the present invention is sublingually administered under the tongue of a diabetic animal model, the expression levels of -amylase, AQP5 and NHE1 are significantly increased, thereby increasing the amount and rate of salivary secretion. When the Ixeris dentate extract is administered with the formulation of the present invention, the extract is sublingually administered with the spray formulation, such that local administration can be carried out directly to the salivary gland tissue that exhibits the saliva secretion inducing effect. Therefore, as the active ingredient of the Ixeris dentate extract is rapidly absorbed in the salivary gland tissue without an absorption process of the digestive system, the secretion of saliva can be induced, thereby minimizing the side effects.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2019
