The present invention relates to a method for forming a functional network of human neuron cells and glial cells, wherein the cells are introduced into a synthetic hydrogel system containing the components polyethylene glycol (PEG) and heparin and cultured therein. During formation of the three-dimensional hydrogel, the cells are introduced into the PEG-heparin hydrogel system together with PEG or heparin, one of the gel components previously mixed with the cells, so that the cells are already in the hydrogel system.
