According to various embodiments of the present invention, an electronic device may include a processor. The processor may be configured to: designate the maximum amplitude of an audio signal as a designated range; process the audio signal in the designated range depending on a designated gain; determine whether distortion is allowed for the processed audio signal based at least on hearing recognition characteristics of the human per frequency band for the processed audio signal; and reduce the gain for the processed audio signal in response to determining that distortion is not allowed for the processed audio signal and adjust the gain for the processed audio signal based at least on the hearing recognition characteristics in response to determining that the distortion is allowed for the processed audio signal. Therefore, the present invention can provide an audio signal having increased sound quality and/or sound volume.
