The present invention relates to an air conditioning system (1a, 1b) for conditioning air of a passenger compartment of a vehicle, which includes a refrigerant circulation system (2a, 2b) and an air conditioning facility (20), and is efficiently operated even in a high temperature gas mode. According to the present invention, the refrigerant circulation system (2a, 2b) comprises: a compressor (4); a first refrigerant-air heat exchanger (5) for transferring heat between a refrigerant and surrounding air; an expansion air tube (7); a second refrigerant-air heat exchanger (8) for adjusting inflow air for a passenger compartment; and a flow path (10) formed by being extended from a branch position (12) to an inlet position (13) and including a heat exchanger (11). The branch position (12) is formed in an outlet of the compressor (4) and the input position (13) is disposed between the first refrigerant-air heat exchanger (5) and the expansion air tube (7). The air conditioning facility (20) comprises a housing for guiding and distributing intake air for a passenger compartment. The housing comprises: a first flow channel (21) having the second refrigerant-air heat exchanger (8) disposed therein; a second flow channel (22) formed as a bypass detouring the second refrigerant-air heat exchanger (8); and a flow guide device (29) for opening/closing the first flow channel (21). Moreover, the present invention relates to a method for operating the air conditioning system.
