The present invention relates to an apparatus for determining a hand movement change using a surface electromyogram signal and a method thereof. According to the present invention, the method for determining a hand movement change using a surface electromyogram signal comprises: a step of extracting raw data by obtaining a surface electromyogram signal from surface electromyogram sensors, respectively, attached to the inside and outside of a wrist; a step of removing DC offset by using a non-operation period of the row data; a step of calculating a first waveform length for the inside of the wrist and a second waveform length for the outside of the wrist by extracting characteristic factors by surface electromyogram signal data from which the DC offset has been removed; a step of calculating a first threshold value for the inside of the wrist and a second threshold value for the outside of the wrist by using a result value of a smoothing filter; and a step of determining the point at which a hand movement change occurs by comparing the first waveform length with the first and second threshold values. The present invention has an effect of not only determining in real time the point at which the fist is clenched and opened by using the surface electromyogram signal acquired from the surface electromyogram sensor attached to the periphery of the wrist muscle, but also precisely determining the point at which a hand movement change occurs by removing noise data included in the surface electromyogram sensor.
