Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for controlling a home appliance by running an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and/or a machine learning algorithm under the 5G environment connected for the Internet of Things. An embodiment of the present invention provides a home appliance control apparatus, comprising: a setup unit, if receiving a voice command from a speaker, setting one main home appliance among multiple home appliances and settings, as a sub home appliance, at least one among the remaining home appliances; and a communication control unit, if set conditions are satisfied, controlling communications between the main hole appliance and the sub home appliance based on a mutually agreed communication protocol besides a preset network protocol. The present invention transmits and receives voice commands of a user based on the agreed communication protocol even though a network failure occurs, thereby being capable of performing remote control of the home appliance.
