According to one aspect of the present invention, a home energy management system is provided. The system includes a plurality of sensors provided on various places including a bedroom, kitchen, and living room in a home. The plurality of sensors includes a sound sensor for grasping whether there is a user in a room and whether the user is moving, a motion sensor for confirming the location of the room user, an illuminance sensor for grasping the brightness of room light and electricity usage, a goniometer sensor for grasping access of the user to the inside and outside, and a temperature sensor for checking the inside and outside temperatures. A platform is configured to receive a value detected from the sensor to control various electronic devices in the home, and is a set-top box provided in the home and performing wireless communication with the sensor and the electronic device. One or more gateways are provided between the sensor and the platform and between the platform and the electronic device. The gateway or platform is configured to determine whether the user is in the room, and when the user is in the room, determines whether the user is moving, resting or sleeping by using the sensed values from the respective sensors. The platform is configured to control the electronic device according to each situation based on the sensor value corresponding to each determined situation.
