The present invention relates to an apparatus for automatically changing a broadcast frequency of a vehicle audio system using GPS information of a smartphone, and a method thereof, in which GPS information is obtained by interlocking with a smartphone in an audio system of a vehicle not equipped with a GPS module, the GPS information is used to distinguish areas, and a broadcast channel is automatically changed. The apparatus comprises: a smartphone which establishes a connection with a vehicle audio unit via Bluetooth and transmits GPS information acquired through the GPS module to the vehicle audio unit when the connection with the vehicle audio unit is established; and the vehicle audio unit which interworks with the smartphone via Bluetooth and automatically changes the broadcast frequency to the same channel during movement to another area on the basis of the GPS information provided from the smartphone.
