The process of treatment of the hydrocracking unit bottoms recycle stream, preferably fresh hydrocracker feed, for removing heavy polynuclear aromatic (HPNA) compounds and HPNA precursors is used, alternatively, most of the HPNA compounds The ionic liquid extraction step removes the remaining HPNA compounds following the adsorption step of removing the ions or the first ionic liquid extraction step following the removal of most of the HPNA compounds removes the remaining HPNA compounds.
