Noise reduction in a signal stream comprising unwanted signals referred to as noise can be achieved by obtaining a digitized noise signal, and subdividing the noise signal obtained using digital processing circuitry into different frequency band segments to obtain a plurality of segmented segments. By generating noise signals. For each segmented noise signal, the processor in time shifts the segmented noise signal by an amount that depends on the selected frequency of the segmented noise signal to produce a plurality of shifted segmented noise signals. The exact time shift applied to each noise segment takes into account the frequency content of the segment and the system processing time. Amplitude scaling is applied for each segmented noise signal. The shifted amplitude-scale segmented noise signal is then output to the signal stream to form a combined anti-noise signal to reduce noise through destructive interference.
