The present invention relates to a composition for improving memory, improving cognitive ability, and preventing, delaying, treating or alleviating dementia containing a Chionanthus retusus extract as an active component. More specifically, the present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and a functional food composition which exhibit effects of improving memory, improving cognitive ability, and preventing, delaying, treating or alleviating dementia, containing the Chionanthus retusus extract as the active component. The composition of the present invention can improve memory and cognitive ability and can effectively prevent, delay, alleviate or treat dementia through acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity, beta amyloid production and aggregation inhibitory activity, and beta amyloid plaque inhibitory activity without side effects.
