Discloses a method for detecting in vitro the presence of a C-terminal truncation mutation of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface (S) gene that encodes a small S protein in an isolated nucleic acid sample. In vitro diagnostic kits for use in the methods described above are also disclosed.
