Porting between local, cluster, and cloud execution can be assisted by using the same source code for multiple data sources. The descriptor source identifiers quoted in the source code are mapped from different execution targets to the data source. Executable code tailored to successive targets is generated using the Resolution API without changing the developer source code. An editable data source mapping is made for each project, stored in a file or project property, and placed in a distributable software package with executable code. The burden on the developer to determine the execution target in his source code and to explicitly handle different execution locations in the source code is reduced. The source code may be exempted from code for detecting an absolute path data source identifier or an execution location. A source-to-source translation injects the call to create a folder, file, or cloud container. The data source resolution may be based on the relative path routed in the data source identifier.
