The technique of the present invention is provided for performing a clear channel estimation (CCA) in LTE-U. Transmissions may be monitored at the resources reserved for the CCA. The energy of the transmissions is detected over a duration that is shorter than the allocated slot in the resource reserved for the CCA. The beacon may be transmitted in a slot assigned to the wireless entity for CCA in response to detecting a clear channel based on monitoring. In another aspect, the timing for beacon transmission and monitoring for the CCA is adapted in response to detecting transmissions during consecutive multiple CCA periods. Additionally, the techniques of the present invention are provided for adjusting to maximum power for transmission of beacons in a slot assigned to a mobile station for CCA in response to detecting a clear channel based on monitoring.
