In a brake actuator having a plurality of actuator housing portions, a diaphragm seal that partially partitions the parking brake deactivation chamber is held between adjacent actuator housing portions, and an elastic element disposed between the diaphragm seal and one housing portion is parked. Upon depressurization of the parking brake deactivation chamber, a push rod extending through the parking brake deactivation chamber generates brake actuation. In order to force the center portion of the diaphragm seal together with both the push rod and the piston, a clamping mechanism is used to axially clamp the center portion of the diaphragm seal between the end of the push rod and the surface of the piston.
