Intelligent laser tracking systems and methods for mobile and fixed position traffic surveillance and enforcement applications. The system disclosed herein can autonomously track multiple target vehicles with a highly accurate laser based speed measurement system, or select a particular target vehicle of interest under manual control via a touch screen. In mobile applications, police vehicle speed is determined via the OBD II CAN port and updated via the built-in GPS subsystem for accuracy. The system and method of the present invention simultaneously provide a narrow image and a wide image of the target vehicle for improved evidence purposes. The new, low inertia pan / tilt mechanism provides extremely fast and accurate target vehicle tracking and compensates for geometric errors and cosine effects.
