The inventions relate to processes of heat and mass transfer, sorption and extraction in the chemical, hydrometallurgical and pharmaceutical industries. The present device contains a plurality of identical cells interconnected into a single stack, said cells having front and side channels of equal area. Each cell is comprised of top and bottom forward and reverse funnels which are mutually inverted and oppositely flared along a vertical axis. Each funnel is comprised of a pair of vanes so that the vanes of vertically adjacent cells lie in a single curved plane. The rearward surfaces of the vanes of a funnel become a part of the funnels of an adjacent cell. A method includes steps in which: heat and mass transfer is carried out between a liquid and a gas by alternating between film and droplet modes of liquid-gas interaction. The liquid and the gas are fed into a cell through a front channel and side channels situated above and below the cell and formed by forward and reverse funnels, causing the flow to swirl. The liquid is equally distributed across the inside of the cell. The liquid is discharged from the cell, causing the flow of liquid to be divided. The flows of liquid are collided with each other, causing swirling motion. The swirled gas-liquid flow is fed into the next cell. Repeated splitting of the flow of liquid is provided.
