FIELD: physics.;SUBSTANCE: there is provided a coherent sound source for marine seismic exploration. Exemplary underwater acoustic radiator comprises a plurality of pistons driven by an electromagnetic force generator having components comprising a stator, armatures, electric coils and permanent magnets. Pistons and components are designed to create mechanical and magnetic symmetry relative to geometric centre of radiator to reduce reactive loads occurring when pistons are actuated. Stator and anchors have magnetic poles which use cone-shaped geometry. Emitter optionally includes control systems to increase accuracy of force generator, provide pressure compensation for pistons, accurate adjustment of static position of pistons and/or change of depth and roll when radiator is configured as towed body. Plurality of such emitters can be configured as an array.;EFFECT: cable rope can connect radiators with the vessel, transmit electric power and compressed gas to each element of the array and/or provide a data transmission medium between the emitter and the vessel.;19 cl, 11 dwg
