Heat exchanger (1) with: a main core portion (6) for effecting heat exchange between air and a coolant; a receiving tank (8) into which flows the coolant having passed through the main core portion (6); and a subcool core portion (10) for subcooling the coolant that has passed through the receiving tank (8) by heat exchange with the air, wherein the heat exchanger (1) is used for a heat pump system (2) which can cool and heat; the main core portion (6) and the subcool core portion (10) are formed by a pair of head tanks (12) separated from each other in a vertical direction, wherein a plurality of tubes (14) are arranged to extend in the vertical direction between the two Extending header tanks (12) and interconnecting the head tanks (12) of the pair and laminations (16) on the tubes (14); and a first passage through which the refrigerant is caused to pass in the order of the main core portion (6), the holding tank (8) and the sub-cooling core portion (10), and a second passage is provided by which the coolant is caused to pass only through the main core portion (6) in a direction opposite to that of the first passage.
