The invention relates to a method for determining the position of a land mine (2) located in a search area (4) by means of a SAR-based distance measuring device (5) which is mounted on an unmanned aerial vehicle (1). It comprises the following method steps: - flying around the search area (4) along a circular trajectory (3) at a previously known altitude (h), during which a transmission signal (S) is emitted in the direction of the search area (4) and a signal is emitted by reflection the echo signal (E) generated by the landmine (1) is received by the distance measuring device (5): determination of a distance information (d) and assignment of a corresponding flight position on the trajectory (3) to each of the stored echo signals (E); - Calculation of the position of the land mine (1) on the basis of the position-dependent distance information (d) and the altitude (h). This method provides a tamper-proof, simple and accurate method of locating landmines regardless of whether the landmine (2) is buried.
