A device for driving an inductive load (200) is described. The device comprises at least one pair of switches (100) connected to the inductive load (200) in a bridge circuit. In this case, at least one of the switches (100) comprises an optically active semiconductor structure, over which leads with respect to the respective switch in reverse biased freewheeling path of the respective switch (100), and which generates light with a dependent on a current through the freewheeling path brightness. The device is designed to delay an activation of the at least one of the switches (100). The device is characterized in that the device comprises at least one brightness sensor (310) for detecting the brightness of the generated light. The device is designed to delay the activation until the brightness sensor (310) has detected a brightness. The device has the advantage that the delay necessary to avoid short circuits or to ensure electromagnetic compatibility can be minimized.
