The invention relates to a method and a system for monitoring the condition of a lubricating oil-operated plain bearing (1) for a rotating component, in which at least one sensor (2) measures a bearing-characteristic physical quantity which is supplied to a condition monitoring control unit (ECU). comprising the following steps: - by the control unit (ECU), at least one physical sliding bearing model (NVF) is supplied with at least the rotational speed (n) and the torque (M) as input variables (u) and a dynamic behavior with these input variables (u) assigning at least one state variable (s; T; p) of the sliding bearing (1) and / or the lubricating oil as output variable (y), - with at least one sensor (2) a comparison value for at least one of the state variables (s; T; p) - from a comparison of the measured value of the state variable (s; T; p) with the model-based output n (y) calculated value of the state quantity (s; T; p) it is evaluated to what extent the physical plain bearing model (N-V-F) depicts the real behavior of the sliding bearing (1).
