This invention provides a process for producing a cyclometallated iridium complex, which process comprises generating a cyclometallated iridium complex by reacting a cyclometallated iridium complex starting material with an organo-uridium material having an aromatic heterocyclic bidentate ligand which is described in U.S. Pat It is capable of forming an iridium-carbon bond and an iridium-nitrogen bond, and using as the starting material an organo-radiidium material represented by the following general formula (1). This invention enables the production of a cyclometallated iridium complex in high yield without the byproduction of a halogen-crosslinked iridium dimer.
