An Electronic Range Selector Actuator (ETRSA) comprises two independent drive systems, each capable of operating a common shaft, such as an output shaft of the ETRSA, via a coupling device interposed between and interconnecting the gear sets of each system. The first drive system of the two independent drive systems is used in normal vehicle operation to change the transmission gear range to a desired gear range. The second drive system is used in the event of abnormal operation of the first drive system to return the vehicle transmission in the Parkstellungsübersetzungsbereich.
