The invention relates to a method for characterizing an object (8) in a surrounding area (9) of a motor vehicle (1), in which an ultrasonic sensor (4) is actuated to emit an ultrasonic signal, a reception signal (10) is determined, which has a time profile of amplitudes (A) of the ultrasonic signal reflected by the object (8), a derivative signal (15) is determined, which describes a first time derivative of the received signal (10), and the object (8) is characterized by the derivative signal (15) in which a number of maxima (19, 20) of the derivative signal (15) are determined and on the basis of the number of maxima (19, 20) a height of the object (8) is characterized, wherein the object (8) is characterized as a high object if the derivative signal (15) has exactly one maximum (19) and the object (8) is classified as a low object, if the derivative signal (15) has at least two maxima (19, 20) has.
