The invention relates to a method for transmitting data from a production machine (1, 4) to a higher-level system (2) via an intermediary gateway (10) comprising the following steps: - providing the data by the production machine (1, 4) in a data file (22) at a designated location; - reading the data file (22) from the memory location through the gateway (10); - analyzing the data file and extracting at least a portion of the contained data by the gateway (10); - transmitting the extracted portion the data from the gateway (10) to the higher-level system (2) via a network according to an M2M communication protocol. The invention further relates to a gateway (10) set up to carry out the method.
