The invention relates to a method for classifying a road condition on the basis of image data of a vehicle camera system and a corresponding vehicle camera system. The method comprises the following steps: providing image data (S12) by a vehicle camera system which is configured to at least a section of an environment outside the cutout at least partially containing the lane on which the vehicle is traveling; distinguishing (S14) diffuse reflection and reflective reflection of the lane by evaluating differences in the appearances of at least one point of the lane in at least two images of the camera system; wherein the images have been taken from different recording perspectives, - determining (S16) whether there is interference in at least one image of the camera system caused by at least one wheel of a vehicle having a road surface during rollover - classifying (S18) the road condition taking into account the reflection type and disturbance intensity results in one of the following five road condition classes: a) Dry lane: reflection type diffuse without disturbance b) Normal wet lane: reflection type with disturbance c) Very wet lane with aquaplaning risk: reflection type with much disturbance d) snow fall path: reflection type diffuse with disturbance) Ice track (ice): reflection type without disturbance.
