Methods are provided for forming an electrode structure that can be used as a biosensor, the electrode structure having a non-random topography located on a surface of an electrode base. In some embodiments, an electrode structure is obtained that does not include an interface between the non-random topography of the electrode structure and the electrode base of the electrode structure. In further embodiments, electrode structures are obtained which have an interface between the non-random topography of the electrode structure and the electrode base of the electrode structure.
