Methods and systems for applying adaptive thermal compensation in operating a rotor of an engine are provided. The method includes: receiving a plurality of rotor torque and temperature parameter data as well as current and voltage of the motor through a range determining module; calculating a cosine value to determine an adaptive thermal compensation applying range by the range determining module from the parameter data set, wherein the cosine value is from a constant torque direction vector and a voltage limit ellipse vector derived from a functional relationship of the one or more parameter data; and applying a change value by a reference change module to stepwise modify the motor current when the motor is operating within the range determined by the adaptive thermal compensation range determining module.
