Proposed are a parking assist system for a vehicle and a method for improving the detection performance of an ultrasonic sensor for the parking assist system. The parking assist system includes: an ultrasonic sensor configured to detect an object by outputting an ultrasonic wave into a first detection area and a second detection area provided beyond the first detection area; a memory configured to store a program for detecting an object based on information detected by the ultrasonic sensor; and a processor configured to execute the program stored in the memory. When the program is executed, the processor checks an echo arriving at the ultrasonic sensor based on whether an object in the first detection area or the second detection area has been detected.
