A hollow-core photonic-bandgap fibre is fabricated from a stack of capillaries. The stack has a hollow core 205 and a boundary with first, corner core capillaries 203 and second, intermediate capillaries 203. The first, corner core capillaries include an additional mass segment 221 at their surface facing the core between adjacent intermediate core capillaries. The stack is reduced to a fibre with a hollow core and a cladding comprising a network of struts and interstitial nodes which together define an array of cavities. A ratio of a length difference between a longest and shortest pitch spacing of core boundary nodes to their average pitch spacing may be less than 0.3. Other fibres are fabricated with intermediate core capillaries including a reduced mass segment or having a core tube that includes additional mass segments at its surface opposite first capillaries. Other fibres are fabricated with a hexagonal core tube or have corner core capillaries with hexagonal outer sections and intermediate core capillaries with frusto-hexagonal outer sections. Other fibres are fabricated with capillaries located on a circle with cladding capillaries, with corner core capillaries formed of a material of higher viscosity or with additional mass segments located at unfilled junctions.
