An elevator test unit for testing the operation of an elevator system, the test unit 201 comprises a first input 202c to receive a command instructing the performance of a test in relation to an elevator car; a first output 202d configured, in response to receipt of the command input at the first input, to cause the generation of a first level request signal or a first simulated level request signal to be sent to a main elevator controller to cause the test; a second input 202f configured to receive an indication of whether the test occurred successfully; and a second output 202e configured to output a report based on the received indication. Further embodiments include systems and methods not inclusive to: an elevator door blockage detection system and method wherein the system performs a nudge operation of the doors to establish the presence of an obstruction between the doors; an elevator emergency call handler system 15 that runs a test sequence and sends a predetermined message to the emergency intercom 112c, and connects the emergency intercom to an operator; and a caller unit 14 that’s in communication with the emergency intercom 112c and delivers an indication of car configuration/movement.
