The invention relates to a method and to a device for outputting a collision warning signal to the surroundings of a center-lane guided tram (1) for collision avoidance with regard to a left-turning motor vehicle probably crossing the lane (2) of the tram (1) wherein, to avoid a collision between tram (1) and motor vehicle (4), the following steps are carried out: determination of a probable left-turn intention (A) of a motor vehicle (4) travelling ahead of the tram (1) on a right-hand parallel lane (5) by means of sensors of the tram (1) that are directed forward and detect the vehicle (4), and if there is a left-turn intention of the motor vehicle (4) , creation of a prediction (B) about the future risk of collision between tram (1) and motor vehicle (4), taking the vehicle distance and the speeds of travel into account, and if a risk of collision is possible, output by the tram (1) of a preventive collision warning signal (C) primarily directed at the motor vehicle (4) travelling in front.
