Monitoring device for monitoring a process which is controlled by means of an automation system which comprises an industrial data communication network, a process control device which is connected to the industrial data communication network and one or more fields devices connected to the industrial data communication network, wherein the monitoring device is designed to produce automatically a process signal description during a configuration phase of the monitoring device on the basis of at least one transmitting initialisation telegram and on the basis of device description files, wherein the monitoring device is designed to produce automatically a database on the basis of the process signal description during a learning phase of the monitoring device, and wherein the monitoring device is designed to detect automatically a fault in the process on the basis of the database during an operating phase of the monitoring device.
